Most people use the Stable release of the popular browser, which is rigorously tested and considered very reliable. Google offers four release channels for its browser: Stable, Beta, Dev, and Canary. The great thing about Chrome Canary is that it installs at a different profile than Google Chrome. The best thing of the new UI and layout and features that I have found useful so far is the Network drop down to be able to see how you site performs on different network speeds, again while it’s not as good as testing it for real on a device, it certainly helps with development and being able to see the Network tab and the timeline when looking at how your site is performing over different internet speeds. Lauren will bring her signature intensity to this distinctly American natural disaster, placing a young boy in the middle of one of the deadliest tornado to strike the United States since 1947. It was part of a larger tornado outbreak in the spring of that year and reached a maximum width of nearly 1 mile during its path through the southern part of the city, killing 158 people, injuring over 1,000 and caused damages amounting to a total of $2.8 billion, making it the costliest single tornado in U.S. The 2011 Joplin tornado was a catastrophic tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri in 2011. He says, “We have a great city, and you know I made a statement several times lately that I believe Joplin’s greatest days are ahead of us.The next book in the "New York Times" bestselling I Survived series will place readers right in the middle of the deadly Joplin Tornado of 2011. Ten years later, Shaw still mourns the 161 lives lost to the storm, but sees a bright future ahead for Joplin. A lot of the lot of our streets and things we’re wearing one so we end up with a third of our city being rebuilt, you know, and with help from money that we wouldn’t have had ourselves, you know,” says Shaw. There were also much bigger decisions to make, with $158 million in federal disaster grants leading to a new library, Joplin Senior Center, 20th Street overpass, and significant infrastructure upgrades. That included requiring hurricane clips to keep the roof on a structure in high winds.Ĭouncilman Shaw says, “There was importance in making sure we had things like those clips.” New construction also went under the microscope, with the city looking was strategies reinforce future homes and businesses. “It was an area where there was a bunch of motorhomes set in place and people could stay there,” says Shaw. Just was not a good idea.”įinding shelter for homeless survivors was crucial, both in the short term and more permanent sites.Ĭity workers coordinated with FEMA to install 586 temporary housing units just weeks after the storm. Onstot says, “So my news release said you know circus animals are not condoned to do debris removal, even though they’re offered and we appreciate everybody’s help. It wasn’t always what to do, but sometimes what not to do: like a circus volunteering elephants for the clean up. “We didn’t have enough phone lines we didn’t have enough computers, you know our IT department kicked into gear,” says Onstot. They had staged mock disasters in the past, so there was a game plan, but the sheer magnitude of the destruction caused unforeseen issues. So we needed to find ways to reach out to people,” says Lynn Onstot, Joplin City PIO.Īn emergency operations center was the headquarters for all the decision making. “Obviously, people did not have a TV, they didn’t have a house in some cases, they may not have a car to listen to a radio. One of the issues was how to let tornado survivors the next step in the recovery and what help was available. Yeah, there was some challenges, you know.” Shaw recalls, “It was amazing to watch the streets being cleared and the properties been cleared. He knew there was a lot of work to be done, both for city leaders and city workers.Įmergency responders combing through the destruction for survivors and victims, plus a massive cleanup to get rid of nearly three million cubic yards of debris. And none of those landmarks that we knew. I mean I thought I was someplace else, it certainly wasn’t Joplin. It wasn’t long before he got a firsthand view of just how bad it was during a ride along the path of destruction with a Joplin police officer. Shaw quickly learned his city had sustained serious tornado damage. Leslie Porth, author of a report on the lessons learned from Joplin, gave HRMR an overview of her findings. And then we started getting telephone calls,” says Gary Shaw, Joplin City Council. 12-08-2013 The massive tornado that hit Joplin in May 2011 tested the emergency operations plans of the area’s hospitals to their limits. “I heard the crack of glass breaking out of the windows around us. That’s why, when you can’t reach the phone, having an expert on hand to answer your redirected calls – preventing calls from being missed entirely or your phone ringing out – makes all the difference to your overall customer service strategy.Īlmost all modern phones and phone carriers (also known as phone networks) will have a call diversion or call forwarding screen. Now, how might call diversion be useful to you? Well, as a business owner, you’re always spinning lots of plates… You might be stuck in meetings, on a job, working with your team, in an area with poor network connectivity or creating a healthy work/life balance. The person calling you will be none the wiser that their call has been redirected, and your number will still appear on their phone. The device connected to the number you have diverted to will then ring, and the call will be transferred. What is call diverting?Ĭall diverting is a feature that allows you to redirect a call to a different number. This is where a call forwarding or call diversion option can be incredibly helpful. If you find you’re seeing voice messages, unanswered calls, or getting cold calls that waste your time, you might be less inclined to delight in an incoming call. So, when an incoming call appears, you might find yourself very happy to answer.īut for many people trying to run a successful business, having the time or capacity to handle calls is not always so smooth sailing… New leads, interesting partnerships, and building relationships with your customers can all happen effectively over the phone. It looks like every feature that would allow my iPhone to ring via teams is off, yet I’m still getting calls on my phone again. As a small business owner or sole trader, you might find you have a bit of a love/hate relationship with your phone. Also in the calling section of settings, call forwarding is toggled off. Is there a way to shut this off? It looks like the settings in the Teams app is already toggled off for calls on the General activity section. It’s been interrupting things I’m doing on my phone until myself or someone in my department answers the call. I got so annoyed by this happening that I shut off calls coming into my phone, and now I’m just notified via my computer, which is fine.Īll of a sudden a few days ago I started getting calls on my iPhone again after months of it not happening. I also used to get calls also forwarded to my personal iPhone, but it would interrupt my music playing or if I’m in the car and got a call the call would ring until someone answered. My job uses Teams, and when my department gets a phone call, typically I get an alert on the bottom right of my computer screen notifying me of an incoming call. Officials said that they first flagged the yacht as being potentially Russian-owned on March 13 and that the Department for Transport, National Crime Agency and Border Force Maritime Investigation Bureau worked together to identify and detain it. It also boasts a laser-powered exterior lighting system, Auto Evolution reports, and is accompanied by what is called a shadow vessel - "where all the water toys and additional equipment can be carried, in order to free up even more space on the mothership." The 118-foot shadow vessel, Phi Phantom, can reportedly fit a "huge tender and a boat," personal watercraft, motorbikes, additional fuel and a car. Its amenities include a freshwater swimming pool that converts into a sealed tank and an "infinite wine cellar," according to Boat International. It was completed in 2021 by Dutch builder Royal Huisman, which said it was set to be the longest sub-500GT yacht in the world. "When you see what he's doing to Ukraine, when you see what he's doing to people's lives, it can't be right to have a yacht like this here in London, able to just sail away and that is why we've impounded it, and denied it ability to go anywhere right now, and it's another indication of how seriously we take these matters," he said. Reuters reports that Phi was in Canary Wharf for a superyacht awards ceremony and was planning to depart today.īut the yacht won't be leaving anytime soon, according to Shapps. The $49.67 million yacht, which is named Phi, belongs to an unnamed Russian businessman and was docked in the Canary Wharf financial district of London, according to the government. Officials in the United Kingdom say they've detained a Russian-owned superyacht docked near London, a first under new sanctions imposed over Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It's the hope that simply doing more makes the S8 better than the competition. It's the endless array of features, useful or not, that Samsung throws at its phones. The iris scanner, the heart-rate monitor and Bixby in its current state exemplifies what's wrong with Samsung's approach to mobile. Dex is due for release at the end of April. Those who pick up the dock will be able to run multiple windowed Android apps and drag them around and multitask just like on a desktop computer. Dex features a HDMI port for a connection to an external monitor, USB ports for a keyboard and mouse, and even a small fan to help keep the S8 cool. Samsung intends the Galaxy S8's excellent multi-core performance to come in handy for Samsung Dex, a dock that turns the phone into a desktop PC. (A new version of Samsung's Gear VR, which features a small wireless controller, has been released alongside the S8.) That might seem trivial given the low hardware requirements of Android gaming, but it has its benefits in demanding virtual reality, where a few extra frames are the difference between smooth gameplay and feeling nauseous. The improvements in multi-core performance (where the Eynos chip comes in faster than Apple's A10) and GPU performance mean there's more power on tap, and more grunt to push higher frame rates in games. The virtual home button also provides some tactile feedback when you push down on the screen, but it's not as convincing as Apple's implementation on the iPhone 7. You can now put the back button on the left and the multitasking button on the right, just as every other Android phone does and has done since Google introduced them with Android 4.0 back in 2012. By moving to software, Samsung has finally fixed its most irritating quirk: flipped back and multitasking buttons. Since the Galaxy S8's slender bezels leave little room for capacitive hardware buttons, it instead uses software buttons. WIRED particularly likes the ability to illuminate the edges of the screen in unique colours when a call or a message comes in. Everything is generally well laid out, and you get extra customisation options over stock. Samsung has juggled a few things around in the settings app, but if you're not a stock Android stalwart it makes little difference in day-to-day use. The quick settings and notifications window – accessed by swiping down from the top of the phone – is near identical to stock Android, bar a change in colour scheme to electric blue. Google Now is easily installed from the Play Store. Google Assistant already runs on any phone with Android 6.0 and up, including the Galaxy S8. The voice feature common to every other virtual assistant isn't even available in English at launch.įor a company with a history of creating forward-thinking, if half-baked, features like multitasking and floating app windows, Bixby is an odd feature. These are lofty goals and Bixby, in its current state, feels like a beta product. Bixby wants to be all things to all people: a set of daily updates, reminders and transport advice like Google Now a powerful image-searching tool like Google Goggles and a voice-activated assistant like Amazon's Alexa, Microsoft's Cortana, or Apple's Siri. No better is this reflected than with Bixby, Samsung's take on the virtual assistant. If you've spent the better part of a decade slowly handing over all your most intimate data to Google in exchange for free email and online storage, though, it's tough to let go. All are perfectly decent, with the browser, in particular, being surprisingly fast. That said, there's no pressing need to uninstall Samsung's apps. Read more: Samsung Bixby: first impressions of the Galaxy S8's Siri-rival It even made us use a physical cable (included) to move data from a Google Pixel. WIRED’s only real criticism is that the Galaxy S8 insists on using its own app to transfer data from another phone, rather than the Google one common to most Android phones. Even those that can't be uninstalled (such as the calendar app or home screen launcher) are easily switched off in the settings. You can uninstall the mail app, messages and browser and replace them with stock Google alternatives. Large portions of Samsung's software suite are optional. The title track was the first song she wrote from the record, dating back to the European leg of her When We All Fall Asleep Tour. According to Eilish, recording took place between April 1, 2020, and February 16, 2021, in weekly schedules, starting with "My Future" and ending with " Oxytocin". Happier Than Ever was recorded at Finneas' home recording studio, located in the basement of his Los Angeles residence. Later in February, Eilish announced the album would have 16 tracks. Her documentary film, Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry, was released the following month. In January 2021, Eilish stated that the album "feels exactly how I want it to", with her not wanting to change a single thing about it. In March, Eilish's brother Finneas O'Connell confirmed this, stating that it would be "pretty pure in its intention" like Eilish's debut, with the two continuing to make the type of music they like to "play live". In a January 2020 interview, Eilish stated she would begin working on her upcoming second studio album during the year. Eilish released a number of singles since the album: the stand-alone " Everything I Wanted" (2019), the James Bond theme song " No Time to Die" (2020), and the Rosalía collaboration " Lo Vas a Olvidar" (2021), the first two of which won the Record of the Year and Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 63rd Grammy Awards, respectively. The album and the single helped Eilish win five awards at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, including the "big four" Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artist. It was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, and spawned the Billboard Hot 100-topping single " Bad Guy", her first number-one on the chart. To further promote the album, Eilish embarked on her sixth concert tour, titled Happier Than Ever, The World Tour, which began on February 3, 2022.Įilish released her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (which was also produced by her brother) on March 29, 2019. Eilish performed the album's tracks in the Disney+ concert film, Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles, which was released on September 3, 2021. Happier Than Ever debuted atop the Billboard 200 as Eilish's second number-one album in the United States, and topping the album charts in 27 other countries. "Therefore I Am" was the highest-charting song from the album, peaking at number two, followed by "My Future" at number six, and "Your Power" at number 10. Seven singles were released in promotion of the album: " My Future", " Therefore I Am", " Your Power", " Lost Cause", " NDA", " the title track", and " Male Fantasy" the first three peaked within the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100. At the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, the album and its title track received a total of seven nominations, including Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Upon release, the album received acclaim from music critics, who praised its stylistic, restrained production, and insightful lyrics. Consisting of torch songs about the downsides of stardom, Happier Than Ever draws heavily from Eilish's rise to fame and the drawbacks that come with it. Primarily a downtempo pop record, Happier Than Ever is characterized by sparse, jazz-influenced, electropop arrangements set to meditative tempos, departing from the upbeat, trap-led sound of Eilish's debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (2019). Eilish cited self-reflection during the COVID-19 pandemic as the biggest inspiration for the record. Eilish co-wrote the album with her brother and frequent collaborator Finneas O'Connell, who also produced the album and played every instrument. Happier Than Ever is the second studio album by American singer Billie Eilish, released by Darkroom and Interscope Records on July 30, 2021. |
